Q Instructions Assignment 2, Part 3: Pattern and Texture (30pts) • Use Av or Tv modes, or if you are comfortable using full Manual, go for it. • Turn in 8 photographs of any subject or subjects with an emphasis on using pattern, texture, and negative space. • Try to choose a different subject for each of the 8 photographs. Don't just focus on one pattern, but juxtapose at least 2 or 3 different ones together. Make sure to incorporate negative space into the photographs. This is not a pattern and texture photo hunt but rather an exercise in how to utilize them together in a composition. Suggestions and tips for better photos: • Photograph using natural light outdoors or natural light coming inside through a door or window. • Take the time to consider frame and focus, and think about the subjects in your pictures. • Now that you know how to Bracket, make the appropriate adjustments so that you get the right exposure, so your photo is not too light and not too dark. • Take the time to consider background, lighting, and colors. • Don't just settle for one pattern such as a brick wall, use it as a backdrop for another contrasting pattern or texture or object that can add a pop of color. • It is easy to stage photos for this part of the assignment: move a red leaf into a pile of yellow leaves, have a friend wear a colorful shirt and stand in front of a wooden fence or brick wall, spill some water onto the monochrome colored pavement to create a pattern, the possibilities are endless. • This assignment is meant to start training your eye to notice the different patterns and textures that are all around us and how they may affect the meaning of a photograph. For example, a close up photograph of the spikes of a porcupine might instill fear while a close up photograph of the textures of waves on a lake may instill a feeling of calm.
